As digital artists and creators, we're constantly looking for software to help us create our best work. There's a lot out there to choose from but here's why Affinity Designer might just be the app for you. Drawing apps like Adobe Fresco and Illustrator are similar to Affinity Designer in that they all feature vector graphics capabilities.
An even greater advantage to using Affinity Designer is that it can handle both raster and vector brushes, just like Adobe Fresco. However, Affinity Designer features a selection of over different vector brushes while Fresco has just 11 vector brushes to choose from.
With Adobe Illustrator, you can create stunning vector-based graphics but it lacks the flexibility of changing between raster and vector. In the same way that we see Fresco and Illustrator work together as companion apps, Affinity Designer packs this idea into a singular experience. This isn't to say that Affinity Designer does everything.
Aside from Affinity Designer's wide range of capabilities, it'd be hard not to notice that it uses a one-time purchase model. Here, the square is a vector while the line was created using a rasterized brush. When it comes to other popular drawing apps like Procreate, Affinity Designer has a few advantages. The ability to automatically save files to your iCloud Drive is a big one.
For Procreate users, saving files is something of a manual process. Affinity Designer makes this simple. Plus, while both apps can edit Photoshop files, Affinity Designer is much better at handling vector files and preserving layers. Within Affinity Designer, you can expect to find standard tools and features like artboards, pencil, shape, and pen tools. To understand these tools we're going to first review Affinity Designer's different modes.
There are three Personas or modes within Affinity Designer, and each Persona comes equipped with its own set of tools. As you may expect, you have the option of plotting your points individually with the Pen Tool and editing your points and curves with the Node Tool.
Then you have others options, like the Vector Crop Tool , which allows you to non-destructively crop your vector elements. Use it to hide or isolate parts of your vector graphics from your document. The Vector Brush Tool allows you to draw with brushes that have the look of raster brushes but with the added benefits of editing and scaling.
Any lines you draw will have a trail of points along them allowing for easy manipulation. One of the biggest setbacks many people find when creating with vectors is that it seems to lack the personality and texture that pixel brushes have.
From brushes that mimic acrylics and inks, to textured shaders, you're sure to find something for your piece. Also exclusive to the Designer Persona toolset is the Shape Tool. And I know what you're thinking: What could possibly be so special about that? Not much — except that you have over 15 shapes to choose from. In apps like Illustrator and Fresco the most interesting shape you'll find is a star.
In Affinity Designer, you can choose from the basic shapes to donuts, call-out clouds, cogs, and more. If you want to try it out before you buy, Serif offers a free day trial of its desktop apps, accessible via Serif website. Affinity Designer is one of the best graphic design programs for illustration tools. It offers a pen tool, a library of brushes, and the ability to create custom brushes and adjust stroke options to give your lines and vectors your desired look and feel.
When we connected a Wacom tablet to a computer, we were happy to find that the brushstrokes responded well to pressure sensitivity. We found the gradient and opacity features easy to use, and we could add custom guides to a brochure to keep in mind where the folds would be.
The one illustration tool we wish this software had was image tracing, which automatically turns a raster image into an editable vector. You can still hand-trace an image using the pen tool and create your own vector, but that takes more time.

What I really love about this graphic editing tool is that you don't have to pay a subscription for it. What's great as well is that the one-off price is very affordable.
I think thier "personas" concept vector, pixel, and export personas is also very effective. These "personas" focus all of the needed editing tools in one area persona , which in turn makes it a far more efficient and enjoyable way to create digital art. As there are so many tools, it can be a little bit overwhelming when you first use Affinity Designer.
However, their vast amount of online tutorials and other helpful documentation makes it easy to get used to all of the tools available.
Adequate for my vector graphics needs, disappointed about lack of features. It takes some getting used to, switching from Adobe Illustrator. The learning experience was fast for me, although there is not "much to learn" due to the lack of features. But overall, I am satisfied with this software because of all the value it provides.
I love that this is a one-time purchase software that is really cheap for small studios and freelancers. If you make any amount of money with design, there is no reason why you should not get Affinity Designer. Blazingly fast, you can scroll, zoom, and create designs super quickly and smoothly.
I love the fact that you can use it for basic "Photoshop"y things as well. The pathfinding options are clunky. Lack of useful features like "blend tool", "shape builder tool" Lack of basic features like a vector-based pattern fill. Edge artifacts when exporting. Industry: Marketing and Advertising. The great UI and amazing performance are an upgrade from our previous vector design software. Affinity designer is the software I was waiting for as long as I remember. It has all the options of the mainstream competition, but for the fraction of the price. The best part of it is that Affinity Designer does what it does perfectly. But, the thing that attracted me to the Serif software, Affinity Designer and it's sister products Affinity Photo and Affinity Publisher, is not only that.
They offered their software for absolutely free for three entire months when the COVID pandemic started, and then for another three months later on. They were not only the best, but the most human and kind.
And that is the kind of company I want to give my money to. The affordable price and the completeness of the package were the middle ground between the expensive and the free option we were looking at.
We switched to Affinity software because we fell in love with the companies spirit. They offered their product for free to those who needed it the most. Needless to say, we bought the full suite after just a few days of use. Discovering Affinity was, to me, as exciting as making my first steps in vector design years ago. Overall, I am happy with this product. It comes with a perceptual purchase plan. I wish they add features like shape builder tool, Image tracer soon.
Then, It will be the best Adobe Illustrator Competitor. The interface is less complicated. Layer management is awesome. There is no image tracing option. Lacking of Shape builder tool, pattern tool, real vector brush tool made this software hard to recommend to others. These alternatives were nearly prefect for me. But they weren't a prefect fit for my purpose. Although, affinity designer is not fully feature packed but is ticks all the boxes I want.
